ASTM이 아닙니다, Ferrous, Nonferrous Material

ASTM은
미국재료시험학회를 말합니다.

American Society for Testing and Material의
약자로 전세계에서 사용되는 단체 규격으로

가장 많이 만나는 강종은
A36 입니다.

A36 에서 “A”는
ASTM 이 아닙니다.

ASTM A36 에서의 “A”는
Ferrous Materials 로 철계 재료를 말합니다.

철계 재료는 Fe가
50% 이상일 때를 말합니다.

철계가 있으면
비철계도 있습니다,

비철계는
Nonferrous Materials 이고

철계 재료와 비철계 재료를
합하면 그것이 금속입니다.

ASTM에서는 비철계 재료는 “B” 로 구분합니다.
ASTM B575 또는 Hastelloy® C 라는 Ni-Mo-Cr 합금인 경우

B575에서의 “B”는 Nonferrous Materials (비철계) 를 말하며
Hastelloy® C276 강종의 경우 (UNS No N10276)

Ni : 55%, Mo : 15~17%, Cr : 14.5~16.5% 에
철은 불과 4~7% 함유 성분을 가지는 비철 재료로

Fe는 형편없는 수준의 함유량을 가지는
비철계 재료입니다.

ASTM 에서 A : Ferrous, B : Non-Ferrous 이고
E는 General Testing Methods를 의미합니다.

예를 들어 ASTM 경도 표인 경우
E0140 으로 나타납니다.

철계 재료와 비철계 재료를 구분하는 것은
KS와 JIS에서도 마찬가지로, 아예 표준서 자체를 분류합니다.

A36에서 A가 ASTM을 의미하는게 아니고
철계 재료 중 탄소강을 말하며

A283 , A285 , A387 , A515 , A516 , A537 , A57 2, A992 강종의
A 는 철계 재료 중에 탄소강을 나타내는 강종입니다.

※ Steel (강 : 鋼)
Iron, malleable in at least one range of temperature below its melting
point without special heat treatment, substantially free from slag, and
containing carbon more than about 0.05% and less than about 2.00%.
Other alloying elements may be present in significant quantities, but
all steels contain at least small amounts of manganese and silicon,
and usually as undesirable constituents, also sulfur and phosphorus.

Steel can be classified on the base of :
– Composition (carbon steel, low alloy steel, high alloy steel, etc.)
– Finishing method (hot rolled steel, cold rolled steel, PM steel, cast steel, etc.)
– Production form (plate, sheet, strip, bar, h-beam, rail, etc.)
– Type of application (construction steel, shipbuilding steel, tool steel, etc.)
