ASTM ASTM A578 은 UT Test 시험에 관한 규정입니다.
A578 규정은 탄소강과 합금강, 도금 강판에 대한 UT Test 규정으로

A435 Killed steel and Alloy steel의 UT Test와 구분됩니다.
A578 Specification covers the procedure and acceptance

standards for straight -beam, pulse-echo, ultrasonic examination
of rolled carbon and alloy steel plates, 3/8″(10 mm) in thickness

and over, for special applications. 규정입니다.
3단계의 Level Test를 가지는 Spec 으로

ASTM A578 Level A
결함의 크기 ＞ 75mm  or 강판 두께의 1/2.

A578 Level B
결함의 크기 ＞ 75mm  or 강판 두께의 1/2 + 다중 결함.

A578 Level C
결함의 크기 ＞ 25mm  or 강판 두께의 1/2.

Level A＜ B ＜ C로 갈수록
검사 결함 크기 규정이 강해집니다.

강재의 파괴 검사는 결함 유무를 쉽게 확인 할 수 있지만
모든 제품에 적용하기에는 한계가 있습니다.

비파괴 검사는 제품에 손상을 주지 않는 검사 방법으로,
강재 내부의 결함 검출에는 초음파 탐상 시험을 주로 사용하고,

표면의 작은 결함 검출에는 자분 탐상 검사,
침투 탐상 검사를 많이 사용합니다.

※ Ultrasonic Test(초음파 탐상 시험)
Nondestructive testing to examine inner defects and material
quality of test body by utilizing acoustic property when
ultrasonic wave has transmitted the test body.

초음파를 시험체 중에 전달했을 때, 시험체에 나타나는
음향적 성질을 이용해, 시험체 내부의 결함이나 재질 등을
조사하는 비파괴 시험입니다.

※ Non-destructive testing (NDT : 비파괴 시험 : 非破壞試驗)
Testing to examine existence of flaws, their existing positions, sizes,
forms, distribution of them without destruction materials and products.
This is at times applied to evaluate metallurgical properties.
There are radiographic testing, ultrasonic testing, magnetic particle testing,
liquid penetrant testing, eddy current testing.

소재나 제품을 파괴하지 않고, 결함의 유무, 존재 위치, 크기, 모양,
분포 상태 등을 조사하는 비파괴 시험.
강질 시험 등에 응용되는 수도 있다.
방사선 투과 시험, 초음파 탐상 시험, 자분 탐상 시험, 침투 탐상 시험,
와류 탐상 시험 등이 있습니다.
