SAE J403 규정은 탄소강재의 화학 성분을 규정한 재질입니다.
SAE 는 AISI 와 재질 번호를 같이 사용하고 있으며 — 일부는 독자 Grade 있음.

Grade 1144 재질은 ASTM A29, A311, A576 규정에도 있습니다.
SAE J403-1144 재질은 0.44% nominal 수준의 탄소강재로

QT 열처리에 의해 항복강도 620, 인장강도 745 MPa, HRB 95 수준의
높은 기계적 성질이 가능하고, 황(sulfur) 함량을 높인 쾌삭 성질의 강재입니다.

SAE J403-1144 강재는 쾌삭 성질로 고속 절단이 가능하고,
Spindles, Gears, Piston Rods, Bolts and Nuts 용도로 쓰입니다.

SAE-J403-1144 환봉 강재는 화염 경화 (flame hardened) 또는 다른 표면
경화 방법으로, 강재의 표면 경도를 높여 내마모성을 얻을 수 있습니다.

※ Free cutting steels (Resulfurized : 쾌삭강, 快削鋼) — JIS
Steels to which free cutting properties is improved by
individual or combined addition of phosphorus (P), sulfur (S),
lead (Pb), selenium (Se), tellurium (Te), calcium (Ca), etc.

인, 황, 납, 셀레늄, 텔루륨, 칼슘 등을 단독 또는 복합으로
첨가하여, 피삭성을 높인 강.

※ Case hardening steel (표면 경화강: 表面硬化鋼)

저탄소강 및 저탄소 합금강으로, 주로 침탄 퀜칭에 의해 표면 경화 시킨 강
표면의 내마모성과 내피로성을 높이지만, 강재 내부의 인성을 유지 시킨 강재.
표면 경화 방법으로는 침탄 (Carburizing), 질화 (Nitriding), 침붕 (Boriding)이 있고
각각 탄소, 질소, 붕소를 강재 표면에 침투 시켜 경화 시키는 방법입니다.
