4340 VAR 강재는 저합금 강재이면서, 열처리에 따라, 항복강도 200 ksi
(1380 MPa) 수준에 이르는 고강도 Ni-Cr-Mo 합금강재입니다.

4340 VAR 합금강은 진공용해 방법 (VAR)으로 생산해 불순물과 강재
내부의 기포를 제거해, 강의 인성을 높여, 프리미엄 항공기강재로 쓰입니다.

4340 VAR 저합금강재는, 경우에 따라 VIM-VAR로도 생산되어, 높은
내피로성, 좋은 인성 (靭性 : toughness), 대구경 제품도 역방향 성질이 우수합니다.

강재는 압연방향이 역방향보다 강재의 충격강도에서 우수하지만
4340 VAR 강재는 압연방향도 물성이 좋지만, 역방향도 좋은 강재입니다.

이와 같은 특성으로 항공기용 재료로 사용되어 AMS (항공재료표준 :
Aerospace Material Standards) 적용이 되어 사용되는 경우가 많습니다.

※ Toughness (인성 : 靭性)
The degree of difficulty in occurring impact breaking
because of the material’s toughness.
질기고 세며, 충격 파괴를 일으키기 어려운지, 어떤지의 정도를 말합니다.
충격에 파괴됨이 없이 충격을 흡수하는 능력으로, 인성이 낮은 강재는
깨지기 쉽고, 높은 인성 재료는 보통 연성도 높습니다.

※ Premium Aircraft Quality Steel (프리미엄 항공기강 : 프리미엄 航空機鋼)
Premium Aircraft Quality Steel is the ultimate quality that can currently be obtained in
production quantities and is usually applied to the most critical parts and components.
Steel conformed to this quality level is produced by the consumable electrode vacuum
arc remelting technique. AMS 2300 defines this quality and outlines testing requirements
Steels described herein which meet this quality are designated by the letters VAR
(Vacuum Arc Remelts) or CEVM (Consumable Electrode Vacuum Melted)
