AISI 4140HT 강재는 열처리 된 (Heat Treated) 고강도 합금 강재를 말합니다.
QT 열처리이기에 경우에 따라 AISI 4140QT 라고도 쓰며 SAE 4140HT 이기도 합니다.

크롬과 몰리브덴을 합금한 강재로, 이들 원소는 열처리 성능을 높이는 원소이고
탄소량도 열처리성이 좋은 0.40% 수준의 중탄소 (medium carbon) 입니다.

AISI 4140HT 강재는 Tempering 열처리 온도에 따라 기계적 성질이 마구 변하는
재질로, 425℃ Tempering 열처리시 항복강도 1138 MPa 수준의 고강도입니다.

일반 탄소강재를 열처리 해서 따라올 수 없는 수준의 높은 기계적 강도이지만
스테인리스가 아니므로 내식성이 담보되지는 않습니다.

※ Tempering (뜨임 열처리)
Heat treatment applied to a ferrous product, generally after quench hardening,
or another heat treatment to bring the properties to the required level, and
consisting of heating to specific temperature (＜Ac1 )and soaking one or
more time, followed by cooling at an appropriate rate.
Tempering generally leads to a reduction in hardness
but can, in certain cases, cause an increase in hardness.

철강재를 퀜칭 경화 후, 또는 특정 수준의 성질을 얻기 위하여 (＜Ac1 ) 온도
이하의 특정 온도로 가열한 후 한두 번 균열화한 다음, 적당한 속도로
냉각하는 별도의 열처리로 냉각하는 별도의 열처리로 보통 템퍼링은
경도를 감소시키지만, 어떤 경우에는 도리어 경도가 증가할 수도 있습니다.

퀜칭 +템퍼링 (담금질 + 뜨임) 열처리를 함으로서
고장력강으로서의 성질을 가지게 한 강재를 말합니다.
