많이 사용하며 철강 회사 이름 중에는
Iron & Steel이라는 영어 이름도 많습니다.
철강에서 철 (Iron)이 있어야
강 (Steel)의 탄생이 가능합니다.
철에 있는 불순물을 제거한 후에야 강의 탄생이 가능하고,
철에 있는 불순물인 탄소, 규소, 망간,
황, 인을 적정한 수준에서 관리해야 비로소
강 (Steel)이 되어,
우리가 만나는 철강재가 됩니다.
그럼 철 (Iron)은 어떨까요?
철은 용광로 (고로 : 高爐)가 있어야 가능합니다.
다른 방법으로도 철은 얻을 수 있지만
주로 용광로에서 생산되며
고로에서 철을 생산하려면
석탄 (원료탄), 철광석, 석회석으로 철을 생산하며
석탄에 산소를 불어 넣어 태울 때의 열로,
철광석에서 쇳물을 뽑아 낼 수 있습니다.
철광석은 지구상에 존재하는 금속 중 가장 많지만,
철광석에 철이 70%정도의 함유된
고품위 철광석을 원료로 사용하고 있습니다.
2010년에 완공되 가동되는 현대제철의 당진제철소 고로의 경우
높이 110 m, 지름 17.4 m이고
내부 크기는 가로×세로×높이 1㎥를 기준으로
5,250개가 들어가는 용적입니다.
현대 당진제철소 고로 처럼, 높이가 110 m나 되니
높아서 고로 라고 하는 용광로는,
철광석에서 철을 뽑아내는 인류가 만들어 낸
가장 효율 좋은 철 생산 기계입니다.
조업 때의 고로 내부 온도는 1,700℃를 넘고,
이 때의 고온으로 쇳물이 생산되며
광석으로부터 처음으로
쇳물이 생산되니
처녀철이라는 용어가 붙습니다.

Material whose main component is iron and generally about
2% or under of carbon and other compositions are contained
주요 원소가 철로서 2% 이내의 탄소를 포함한 강재
※ Cast Iron
Material, whose main components are iron and carbon, generally
over about 2% of carbon and other components are contained
철 중에 탄소가 2% 이상 포함된 철강재
※ Pure Iron
Iron containing very little amount of carbon
and other impurity elements
Although there is no clear division of a limit of impurity elements,
the iron with carbon content rate up to about 0.02% is called pure iron.
Electrolytic iron, Armco iron, carbonyl iron, and reduced iron
are treated as pure iron .
탄소, 기타의 불순물 원소가 매우 적은 철, 불순물의 한계에 대한
명확한 구분은 없으나, 탄소 함유량이 0.02% 정도 까지를
순철이라고 부르고 있다.
전해철, 암코철, 카보닐철, 환원철은 순철로 취급되고 있다.

※ Semi-finished products
Semi-finished products whose cross-sectional shapes along the length
are constant, obtained by rolling or forging of steel ingots or
by continuous casting.
Generally intended for conversion into finished products by the
subsequent hot rolling or hot forging.
According to the cross-sectional shape and dimension,
classified into slab, bloom, billet, sheet bar and so on.
※ Bloom
Semi-finished products having certain size of square cross-section
(square and rectangular of the long side twice or less the shorter size)
or round cross-section
There are square blooms, rectangular blooms and round blooms,
and generally semi-finished products of one side or
diameter of over 200 mm.
